Arlo
Arlo’s time with us at IFS was truly marked by friendship. When we were first contacted about a calf with mobility differences, Arlo was known as “Milkshake,” and he had formed a wonderful bond with Faith—then known as “Cheeseburger”—who had been moved from a neighboring farm after suffering severe frostbite that caused her to lose an entire rear hoof. While the rescue was intended for Arlo, we successfully arranged for the friends to remain together, with Faith joining Arlo in the move to the sanctuary.
While Arlo always struggled to walk very far on his own, he was often able to make his way out to the pasture with IFS co-founder Jered’s assistance. A special cart was also designed for Arlo by an engineer to enable more adventurous pasture journeys. Of course, Arlo did spend a lot of time in his barn stall, but he was almost never alone. It was such a joy to see the constant stream of friends (of all IFS species, including humans!) make their way into Arlo’s room; it was certainly the place to be, and Arlo was always a gracious host.
We knew that Arlo’s time with us would never be long enough, as his growing size would make it more and more difficult for him to be mobile, which would then lead to further health-related issues, but that never makes it any easier to say goodbye. We are just so thankful to have been part of his circle of friends who marked his time at IFS.
