Auggie, our resident ray of sunshine, was born with a rare genetic condition called hypotrichosis, a condition characterized by a lack of hair and teeth. His previous guardians, knowing that they could not provide for his unique needs, surrendered him to us at just two weeks old.
Because of his unique features, Auggie will need special care and accommodations throughout his life. As a baby, he frequently wore coats to protect his hairless body from the cold. Now, he can often be seen wearing a grazing muzzle, as we discovered that’s he is prone to blockages of hay and straw in his throat that interfere with his airway. The grazing muzzle prevents Auggie from ingesting hay, but allows him to live in the misfit barn with his bestie, Joey, instead of having to live alone in a hay-free environment.
Auggie knows nothing of his differences or the challenges he may face in his life due to his genetic condition. He loves to be as close as possible to friends of all species, especially his best buddy Joey. With time and lots of love, Auggie has grown some peach fuzz hair on his body, and we are so excited to watch him continue to thrive at the sanctuary!
