Al joined the Iowa Farm Sanctuary family on November 22, 2022 after he was rescued from a horrific neglect case in Washington County, IA.
Al’s situation was one of the most dire we had ever seen. There were over 100 starving sheep, goats, and pigs living on the property among their dead friends and family members. The property was littered with piles of deceased, half decomposed animals. There was no access to adequate food or water, and the living animals were starving.
Amazingly, BJ was in relatively good health at the time of his rescue despite living in such a hellish situation. He was better nourished than most of the individuals with whom he was rescued, and after getting to know BJ, we can’t say that we’re too surprised. This feisty little guy is full of mischief—always climbing, headbutting, and causing trouble. If anyone could find food, it’s this guy! He’s so resourceful and does not depend on humans to meet his needs. BJ is absolutely his own person, and we love that about him!
Understandably, BJ was not interested in human interaction whatsoever upon arriving at the sanctuary. However, with time and lots of treats, his walls have begun to come down. Maybe he likes to follow humans around because he is becoming more social, or maybe it is because he believes they have animal crackers in their pockets. Either way, we are happy to see him come out of his shell.
