Odin is a vibrant, wooly bundle of love, but this precious boy almost didn’t survive his rescue. On an ordinary evening in October 2020, we were alerted to a craigslist ad that read as follows:
“120lb lamb with head injury. Still alive. Come butcher yourself. $100 or best offer.”
We responded to the ad immediately, and the farmer agreed that surrendering the lamb to our sanctuary was indeed the best possible offer! He was incredibly grateful that we could give this lamb a chance at survival. When we arrived at the farm, we were blown away by how severe the situation was. The lamb couldn’t stand or walk, and his breathing was unsteady. We knew that mere minutes would mean the difference between life and death.
We rushed our sweet boy straight to Iowa State for emergency care—he thrashed in fear and discomfort, intermittently losing his breath along the way. We were terrified that he would pass away before we arrived at the hospital, but he held on. We didn’t know if he’d live to see the morning, so we showered him with love and named him Odin. He fought bravely through the night, and to everyone’s amazement, he slowly started making progress.
Within one week’s time, Odin was back on his feet, standing and walking on his own. His survival is truly miraculous, and his recovery simply leaves us in awe. These days, you’d never know that this precious boy had endured a near-fatal head injury. Odin’s spirit is unbreakable, and his story captured hearts all around the world. Odin always has a little smile on his face, and we know that it comes from a thankful heart. Odin is our hero.
