Shelly
Shelly survived the unthinkable. In April 2020, a tornado destroyed the CAFO that Shelly and her friend Estelle were confined to in Georgia. When rescuers arrived on scene, they were informed that 10,000 chickens had already been buried alive in an effort to clean up the property. Rescuers were denied the opportunity to search for survivors, and the police were called in response to their presence.
Two weeks after the tornado, hundreds of chickens remained trapped and suffering under the debris. Six rescuers were charged by police and had to leave without any birds, but thankfully, compassionate locals were eventually able to rescue hundreds of chickens.
We are so thankful that Shelly and Estelle survived the nightmare that they experienced. It is truly devastating to think of the fear, pain, and desperation that all of the chickens in this CAFO endured.
Unfortunately, Estelle passed away in December 2020, and Shelly passed away in March 2021. Their bodies failed them due to genetic manipulation by humans and modern animal agriculture, which resulted in their large size. While they were still with us, both Shelly and Estelle were the living the happy life that they deserved.
