Pepper was rescued during the “Chicken Toss” portion of Pioneer Days— an event held in Ridgeland, Wisconsin, where approximately 150 chickens were intentionally thrown from a rooftop as a crowd fought over them as they landed in their grasping hands. A few members from our sanctuary joined forces with almost 40 other activists to protest the event, negotiate the surrender of chickens, and document the horrific circumstances. Pepper was haphazardly slung into the crowd of people halfway through the event, and fortunately, she fell directly into our co-founder, Jered’s, hands! He immediately took her to the triage station, where she received a quick assessment and was checked for injuries. Fortunately, she did not sustain any major injuries, but she was missing multiple nails from both of her feet.
